The Fixes!
I am not sure any of you are reading these-- but you SHOULD be. They are short and important. Every Tuesday, The Times publishes a column called The Fixes, which looks "... at solutions to social problems and why they work". The column is written by a different person each week, someone with a unique perspective on the issue and the solution being put to work. On Saturday, the Author addresses the comments, questions and criticism posted by readers; I love this feature because it provides a wealth of perspectives on complex issues. I feature the column here each week! Look back 'here' for last week's installment.
This week, I am excited to announce, is about a youth job-training program with which I am familiar! Yay for Social Entrepreneurs (by the way, right then was the first time I ever got all the letters in that word in the right place on the first try!)!! Year Up is so much more that "job training" -- yes, it places underprivileged high school graduates in internships where they receive job training, make connections etc, but it also works with them on the all important, and arguably more difficult, skill of "professionalism"- how to act and interact in a professional setting, the nuances of handshakes, small talk, expectations, being proactive etc. Within four months of graduating from its program, 84% were either employed or enrolled full time in college. The program is super interesting, read all about it 'here'.
