Fixes

Every Tuesday, The Times publishes a column called The Fixes, which looks "... at solutions to social problems and why they work". The column is written by a different person each week, someone with a unique perspective on the issue and the solution being put to work. On Saturday, the Author addresses the comments, questions and criticism posted by readers; I love this feature because it provides a wealth of perspectives on complex issues. I will feature the column here each week!

This week the column is about a company called Husk Power Systems, which is bringing electricity to the poorest areas of the world. The system uses burns rice husks to generate power. The practice is sustainable, eco-friendly and, so far, replicable. I liked this article because it highlights the fact that, often,  solutions to our most pervasive problems are based on technologies and practices that already exist, it is not a matter of innovating something entirely new, it is just about restructuring ideas we already have. Read the article 'here'.
